Pest Guide

Recognising a pest correctly is half the job — the cockroach species and the rodent species each change the method. The rules below show adult body length to scale.

Bed bug Cimex lectularius

Bed Bugs A flat, night-feeding insect that harbours in mattress seams and bed frames. Nothing to do with cleanliness — they are carried in.

Mice and Rats House mice and brown rats — in a building because they can get into it, contaminating food and gnawing cables.
Common house mosquito Culex pipiens

Plain grey-brown. The long slender proboscis separates it from other small flies.

Mosquitoes A biting fly whose females alone take blood and which needs standing water to breed — so control starts with the water, not the spray.

Ants A social insect that comes indoors for food, water and shelter, with the nest usually in a wall void or in soil outside the building.

Fleas A small reddish-brown biting insect brought in on pets. Most of the population is eggs and larvae down in the carpet.
House dust mite Dermatophagoides spp.

Not visible to the naked eye.

House Dust Mites A mite too small to see, living in bedding, pillows and fabric furniture; the problem it causes is allergens, not bites.
Termite worker Isoptera

Wingless, soft-bodied and light caramel in colour. Avoids light, so it is usually seen inside a broken mud tube.

Woodworm and Termites Two separate problems that eat timber from the inside — woodworm larvae working within the wood, and termites arriving from the soil in mud tubes.

Moths The adult of a larva that feeds on wool, carpet and upholstery. The larva does the damage — the moth in the room does not.

Stored Product Pests Small moths and beetles that breed inside dry food — flour, rice, nuts, dried fruit and spices.
